  1. Skin care self exam: For "A Guide to Skin Cancer Self-Examination", please visit www.dermatology.ca
  2. Be sun smart: Do not use tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look like you have been in the sun, consider using a sunless self-tanning products, or spray tan, but continue to use sunscreen with it.
  3. Do not bite your fingernails: You can transfer infectious organisms from your fingernails and mouth. Nail biting can damage the skin around your fingers, allowing infections to enter. Keep your nails clean and dry to prevent bacteria from collecting underneath the nail.
  4. Moisturize: If your skin feels dry, moisturize.
Regular moisturizing of the skin can:
    • Prevent dryness
    • Reduce sensitivity and give protection
    • Improve tone, texture and cover imperfections
    • Increase water and oil holding capacity of your epidermis, and
    • Reduce fluid loss from the outer skin layer
  5. Eat healthy: All the expensive skin care products in the world won't achieve healthy skin without a healthy diet.
    • Fish contains oils that will help nourish your skin and add luster and softness to your complexion.
    • Ground flaxseeds are an excellent source of omega-three fatty acids, which promote good skin health.
    • Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin. Choose foods that are dark orange (carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash) and dark green (broccoli, spinach, kale) vegetables -- all of which are high in vitamin A.
    • Vitamin E helps promote great skin, which include nuts such as hazelnuts and almonds -- which are high in vitamin E -- as snacks.
    • A diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other healthy foods can lead to healthier skin. Be sure to include some lean protein in your diet. Our skin is made of protein, and consuming protein is necessary for healthy skin.
  6. Drink plenty of water: A natural glow and radiance of the skin can be achieved only through regular intake of water.
    • Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is important for overall good health because water is involved in and helps improve many bodily functions. These functions include digestion, absorption, circulation, and excretion.
    • Water assists in the flushing or removal of harmful toxins. If the body does not have enough water then wastes will not be removed efficiently. The body would be keeping in toxins instead of expelling them as required for proper health.
    • Another benefit of drinking water is to carry nutrients into the cells of the body. In addition to helping nutrients get into the cells where they are needed, the benefit of drinking water in adequate amounts helps keep the cells well hydrated to allow proper functioning.
    • Drinking water is also beneficial for muscles which helps maintain proper muscle tone and prevents painful muscle cramping.
    • Drinking water helps increase energy levels, and lubrication of the joints in the body.
    • Drinking water gives the skin a radiant, healthy, younger looking complexion with fewer wrinkles, and allows skin to maintain its elasticity and suppleness.
    • Drinking water in large amounts is beneficial for the skin in the treatment of disorder such as eczema and psoriasis. Proper hydration will help to eliminate the appearance of sunken eyes, and circles under the eyes. Skin plumpness is also sometimes stated as a benefit of drinking water.
  7. Exercise: Exercise should be an important part of every anti-aging skin care program.
    • Living a sedentary life contributes to aging skin, because exercise helps to tone your muscles and get your blood flowing.
    • The physical benefits of exercise, the benefits of a regular exercise program will show on your face. Having a bright smile and lots of energy will help you look and feel younger, at any age.
    • Most of us do not like the appearance of acne or pimples on our face. This can cause discomfort that limits our movements. Exercise could be the key to preventing pimples and acne.
    • It also helps to strengthening our bodies and minds. Exercise can affect your skin complexion and beauty.
  8. Be smoke free: Exposure to cigarette toxins accelerates aging of the skin. Muscles used from puckering to inhale cigarettes, cause deep lines around the lip area. Frequenting squinting to prevent smoke around the eyes cause crow's feet, which increase the appearance of aging.
